This material can be used to make cylinder liners with cylinder bores between 100 mm and 190 mm.

“The deformation of the cylinder bore caused by the load makes it more difficult to seal between the cylinder liner and the piston ring set, increasing fuel consumption and wear,” explains Gian Maria Olivetti, CTO of Federal-Mogul Powertrain. “And if you increase the tension of the piston ring, it will cause more friction and higher fuel consumption.”

“We have developed new liner materials with higher strength and stiffness, enabling our OEM customers to develop more efficient engines with higher peak cylinder pressures,” continues Olivetti. “At the same time, our research and development results enable OEM customers to use thinner cylinder liners for a more compact engine design.”

The Young's modulus of GOE330 is more than 15% higher than the existing high-strength iron cylinder liner material. When the pressure is 270 MPa, the fatigue strength is about one-third higher than the existing material. The Federal-Mogul Powertrain program will increase the strength and rigidity of materials to new levels through future research and development.
