Nigeria purchased over 900,000 tons of chemical fertilizers in 2010

The Nigerian Minister of Agriculture, Professor Abdullah, recently stated that Nigeria purchased more than 900,000 tons of fertilizers in 2010, worth 89.3 billion naira (about US$600 million). These fertilizers were distributed to the states in the form of government subsidies of 25%, and the subsidies were paid out to 22.3 billion naira. Professor Abdullah also said that at present, Nigerian agriculture accounts for more than 42% of GDP, and the employment of the agricultural sector accounts for 70% of the effective labor force in the country.
